Day 1
Machame Gate to Machame Camp

Your adventure begins with a short drive from Moshi to Machame Gate, where park permits are processed and your trek begins. The trail winds through thick, misty rainforest—watch for monkeys and exotic birdlife along the way. Expect a steady but manageable climb on sometimes muddy trails, aided by trekking poles and gaiters. After 11 km of trekking (5–7 hours), you’ll reach Machame Camp (2,835 m) for dinner and overnight under the stars.

Leaving the rainforest behind, you’ll enter the heather and moorland zone. The trail ascends steep ridges and crosses small valleys, offering panoramic views of Kibo Peak and the Shira Plateau. After 4–6 hours of hiking over rocky terrain, you’ll arrive at Shira Camp (3,750 m) perched on a wide-open plateau with sweeping views of Kilimanjaro’s volcanic landscape.

Day 3
Shira Camp to Lava Tower to Barranco Camp

A key acclimatization day. You’ll trek to Lava Tower (4,600 m), a jagged volcanic rock outcrop known as the “Shark’s Tooth,” where you’ll stop for lunch. Although you won’t sleep at this high elevation, reaching it helps your body adapt. Afterward, descend through surreal valleys filled with giant lobelias and senecios to Barranco Camp (3,960 m). This up-and-down route supports better acclimatization and sets you up for summit success.

Day 4

Start the day scaling the famed Barranco Wall—a thrilling climb with panoramic views, but no technical climbing required. After a short rest at Karanga Camp, continue through the desolate alpine desert to reach Barafu Camp (4,673 m), your base for the summit push. Tonight, you’ll rest early, hydrate, and prepare gear for your midnight ascent. Total hiking time is 8–10 hours over 9 km.

Day 5
Summit Day – Barafu to Uhuru Peak to Mweka Camp

Rise at midnight for your final summit attempt. By headlamp, climb through scree and switchbacks to Stella Point (5,756 m), catching sunrise as you approach the crater rim. A final push brings you to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m)—Africa’s highest point! After celebrating and taking photos, descend to Barafu for brunch, then continue to Mweka Camp (3,100 m) for a well-earned rest. A long but life-changing 17 km journey (11–15 hours total).
