Zanzibar is home to some of the most breathtaking beaches in the world—picture powdery white sands, turquoise waters, and vibrant coral reefs teeming with marine life. With around 25 beaches scattered across the island, each coast offers a different vibe and experience, from lively villages to serene, untouched shores. Whether you’re planning to relax, dive, sail, or explore, here’s a guide to help you decide which part of Zanzibar is right for you.
The northern coast of Zanzibar, particularly Nungwi and Kendwa, boasts some of the island’s most popular beaches. Known for their postcard-perfect white sand and gentle, clear waters, these beaches are unique in that they are not heavily affected by the tides—making them ideal for swimming any time of day. The area has a laid-back, vibrant atmosphere with plenty of restaurants, beach bars, and accommodation ranging from budget to luxury. However, if you’re looking for true seclusion, the north might feel a bit busy, and you may prefer to explore quieter areas on the east or south coast. Notable villages in this region include Nungwi, Kendwa, Uroa, Pongwe, and Kiwengwa.
Zanzibar’s east coast is famous for its long stretches of pristine beaches and stunning coral reefs just offshore. This region is a top choice for snorkelling and diving, with opportunities to spot seahorses, sea turtles, and colorful tropical fish. The east coast is more influenced by the tides, which means dramatic changes throughout the day—low tide lets you walk far out into the ocean, perfect for beach strolls and shell collecting. It’s also a favorite spot for kite surfers and wind surfers, thanks to the consistent breeze. Matemwe stands out as one of the longest and most scenic beaches here, and like the north, the area offers a wide range of accommodations to suit every traveler.
If you’re seeking peace and a more authentic experience, head to the south-east. This stretch of coast is ideal for kite surfing, windsurfing, and sailing, thanks to its steady winds and wide open beaches. Traditional dhow boats dot the shore, offering scenic sails along the coast. Kizimkazi, located in the southern part of the island, is known for dolphin watching, while charming villages like Jambiani, Paje, and Bwejuu offer a laid-back, local atmosphere. Jambiani, in particular, is a favorite for its warm, welcoming community and timeless coastal charm.
For a more off-the-beaten-path experience, consider the south-western coast. This area is quieter, with fewer tourists and more untouched beaches. While the beaches here are not as widely known, they offer gentle tides and a sense of solitude. If you’re a diver, don’t miss the Menai Bay Conservation Area—a protected marine paradise perfect for underwater exploration. On the western coast, you’ll also find the historic Stone Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the cultural heart of Zanzibar, full of winding alleys, spice markets, and centuries-old architecture.
