5 Days Nyerere & Mikumi Mid-Range – Walking & Boat

Your adventure begins with a scenic road transfer from Dar es Salaam to Nyerere National Park, the largest protected wildlife area in Africa. The drive (approx. 5–6 hours) takes you through local villages and rolling landscapes. Check into your mid-range lodge or tented camp and enjoy lunch before heading out on a boat safari along the mighty Rufiji River — a park highlight. Encounter hippos, crocodiles, vibrant birdlife, and possibly elephants drinking along the riverbank. Return to camp for a relaxing dinner and your first night in the wild.

Start with an early morning game drive in Nyerere’s unspoiled terrain. With fewer crowds than Northern parks, you’ll enjoy a more intimate wildlife experience. Look out for African wild dogs, lions, giraffes, zebras, elephants, and more. Enjoy a picnic lunch in the bush, then continue exploring this vast ecosystem filled with wetlands, woodlands, and open savannas. Head back to your lodge or camp for dinner and a peaceful evening surrounded by the sounds of nature.

Embark on a walking safari led by a professional ranger. Learn about the park’s smaller creatures, tracks, and plant life while appreciating the raw wilderness from ground level. After lunch, drive toward Mikumi National Park, enjoying the diverse Tanzanian scenery along the way. This park shares an ecosystem with the Selous, making the transition seamless in wildlife and landscape. Arrive at your mid-range lodge or camp in Mikumi. Settle in, enjoy dinner, and prepare for tomorrow’s game drive.

After an early breakfast, set off on a game drive through Mikumi’s Mkata Floodplain, often compared to the Serengeti for its open landscape and abundant wildlife.

Spot large herds of elephants, buffalo, giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, lions, and occasionally leopards or sable antelope. Enjoy a picnic lunch and continue exploring different habitats of the park. Return to camp for your final night, recounting stories of your sightings over dinner.

Enjoy one last game drive in Mikumi to catch any animals you may have missed. After breakfast back at the lodge, begin your drive back to Dar es Salaam. Arrive in the late afternoon. Drop-off at your hotel or airport marks the end of your safari adventure.
