We’ve gathered some of the most frequently asked questions from our clients to help you choose the perfect Kilimanjaro climb and safari experience. Take a moment to browse through them, and if you don’t find the answer you’re looking for, feel free to reach out. Our team will be more than happy to assist you!
Our top recommendations are the 7-Day Rongai Route, 8-Day Lemosho Route, and 9-Day Northern Circuit. These routes provide the perfect balance of high summit success rates, breathtaking scenery, and fewer crowds. The 7-Day Machame Route is also a great choice, though it tends to be more popular and busier with other climbers.
Avoiding altitude sickness is the most important factor on Kilimanjaro. Walk slowly, drink plenty of water, and eat enough food to maintain your strength. Always join optional acclimatization hikes, and consider taking Diamox if recommended. To stay healthy, remember to disinfect your hands after every bathroom visit and before meals.
Can I Obtain My Visa for Tanzania at the Airport?
Yes, citizens of the USA, Canada, the UK, and most European countries can obtain a visa on arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport. The fee is $100 for U.S. passport holders and $50 for most other nationalities. Travelers from other countries should check with their local Tanzanian embassy for eligibility. To save time and avoid delays at the airport, we recommend applying for your visa online or in advance.
While travel insurance is not mandatory for climbing Kilimanjaro, it is highly recommended. Having valid insurance ensures coverage for helicopter evacuation and protects you from unexpected costs in case of an emergency on the mountain.
A group climb brings together up to 15 climbers who book separately and join the same scheduled route on set dates. A private climb is exclusively for you and your chosen companions—friends, family, or colleagues. Private climbs can be arranged on any route and on the dates that suit you best, with no limit on group size. The level of service on the mountain remains the same for both options.
Yes. Rain and even snow are possible on Kilimanjaro year-round. Since the base of the mountain is a rainforest, a high-quality waterproof jacket and pants are essential, no matter when you climb.
Temperatures on Kilimanjaro can drop significantly. You may sleep in conditions as low as 20°F (-6°C) and hike in temperatures as low as -20°F (-29°C) near the summit. Nights can be very cold, so proper preparation is essential. A balaclava and winter hat help keep your head warm and protect against dust while sleeping. You’ll have four-season tents, but staying warm mainly depends on your sleeping bag and clothing—be ready to sleep in your fleece or even winter jacket to stay comfortable.
On Kilimanjaro, we provide wash bins with hot water and soap for washing your hands and face in the morning and before bed. You can do this inside your private tent or in our toilet tent, where you can stand while washing. Additionally, wet wipes are available if you prefer a quick freshen-up.
No. Only the climber who is injured or exhausted needs to descend. The rest of the group can continue the hike. Each climb is supported by multiple guides, so when a climber descends, it does not affect the rest of the party. The descending climber will be accompanied by 1 guide and 1–2 porters to their accommodation. If needed, we can arrange a doctor for a check-up or transfer to a nearby hospital at additional cost. Your safety is our top priority.
Additional nights at the accommodation, as well as meals, are not included and are considered extra. However, we will assist you in arranging your stay so you don’t have to worry. In the rare case your accommodation is fully booked, we will organize an alternative lodging for the additional night(s) at extra cost and ensure your luggage is transferred.
