Saddle Hut

Saddle Hut

Saddle Hut is the second overnight stop on the Mount Meru trekking route and serves as the main base camp for the summit attempt to Socialist Peak (4,566m). Located in a broad saddle between Little Meru and the main crater ridge, the hut sits in the alpine desert zone of the mountain. Its exposed and elevated position offers a true high-altitude mountain experience and marks a significant milestone in the climb.

After leaving the forested slopes below Miriakamba Hut, trekkers enter a more open and rugged environment. Vegetation becomes sparse, temperatures drop noticeably, and the dramatic volcanic landscape begins to dominate the scenery.

Location and Surroundings

Saddle Hut is strategically positioned between two peaks — Little Meru and the main summit ridge. The name “Saddle” comes from its location in a natural dip or saddle between these high points. From this vantage point, climbers enjoy wide panoramic views of the Meru Crater, the Ash Cone rising inside the crater, and the expansive plains of northern Tanzania.

On exceptionally clear mornings, it is sometimes possible to glimpse Mount Kilimanjaro in the distance, standing above the horizon. Sunsets from Saddle Hut are particularly beautiful, with warm golden light illuminating the volcanic slopes and dramatic sky.

Because of its altitude and open setting, the hut is more exposed to wind and changing weather conditions than lower camps. Afternoons may feel mild under direct sunlight, but temperatures drop quickly once the sun sets.

Accommodation and Facilities

Sleeping Cabins

Saddle Hut consists of simple wooden dormitory-style cabins maintained by park authorities. The huts are solidly built and provide shelter against wind and cold, which are common at this elevation. Inside, climbers sleep on bunk beds equipped with basic mattresses.

Trekkers must bring their own warm sleeping bags, as temperatures at night often approach freezing. The thin mountain air and cold conditions make proper insulation essential for comfort and rest before the summit attempt.

Although the accommodation is basic, it is practical and secure. Many climbers appreciate the comfort of hut accommodation compared to camping in tents at high altitude.

Dining Hut

A separate dining hut serves as the communal gathering space. Here, mountain crews prepare and serve hot meals, tea, coffee, and soups. Proper nutrition and hydration are especially important at this stage of the climb, as the body works harder at higher altitude.

The dining hut also becomes the center for the evening summit briefing. Guides provide important information about departure time, route conditions, pacing, and safety instructions. Climbers usually organize their gear, prepare headlamps, and dress warmly before going to sleep early.

Sanitary Facilities

Basic shared toilet facilities are available near the huts. Water is limited at this altitude and primarily reserved for cooking and essential use. There are no shower facilities. Trekkers are advised to carry personal hygiene items such as wet wipes and hand sanitizer.

Lighting around the camp may be limited, so carrying a personal headlamp is strongly recommended, especially for the midnight summit departure.

Acclimatization and Optional Activities

Little Meru Acclimatization Hike

In the afternoon, most trekking groups undertake an optional acclimatization hike to Little Meru (3,820m). This short but steep climb helps the body adjust to the higher altitude and significantly improves summit success rates.

The hike takes approximately 1–2 hours round trip and rewards climbers with impressive views of the crater and surrounding landscape. Returning to Saddle Hut afterward allows time for rest and preparation before the summit push.

Base Camp for Summit Night

Saddle Hut is the official starting point for the ascent to Socialist Peak. Climbers typically wake around midnight for tea and light snacks, then begin the climb between 1:00 and 2:00 AM. The early start ensures arrival at the summit at sunrise, when visibility and scenery are at their best.

The trail from Saddle Hut follows a steep ridge past Rhino Point and Cobra Point before reaching the summit. After celebrating at the top, climbers descend back to Saddle Hut for a short rest before continuing down the mountain.

Overall Experience

Saddle Hut represents the transition into true alpine conditions on Mount Meru. Its high-altitude location, dramatic scenery, and cooler climate create an atmosphere of anticipation and adventure. While facilities are simple, they provide essential comfort and safety in a rugged environment.

Staying at Saddle Hut is a defining part of the Mount Meru trekking experience — a moment of preparation, reflection, and excitement before reaching the summit at sunrise.
