Best time to climb Kilimanjaro

Mount Kilimanjaro is a year-round destination, offering trekkers the chance to summit Africa’s highest peak in every season. At Golden Trips Tanzania, we offer expert guidance to help you choose the best time to climb based on your personal preferences, fitness level, and travel schedule.

The most popular climbing periods fall during the dry seasons—from December to March and from June to October. December to March is generally warmer, with clearer skies and less likelihood of snow along the trails. February stands out as the ideal month, thanks to mild temperatures and minimal rainfall. The June to October season, on the other hand, is cooler, and while the weather is still dry, it tends to be busier with more climbers on the mountain.

Climbing during the rainy seasons (April–May and November) is less common, as the trails can be muddy and visibility limited. However, for adventurous travelers and experienced hikers looking to avoid the crowds, the off-season offers solitude and a unique, mist-covered perspective of the mountain.

Preparing for the Ascent

Though there are routes suitable for all levels, climbing Kilimanjaro requires stamina and determination. You should be prepared to walk an average of 6 to 7 hours a day, often at high altitude. To ensure you’re ready, we recommend regular training hikes in the months before your trip. Start with shorter treks, then build up to full-day or weekend hikes to improve your endurance.

Complement your physical training with breathing exercises, yoga, or stretching routines. These not only improve flexibility and balance but also strengthen your lungs and muscles—both essential when you’re trekking at elevation.
